Description:

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is a neurotrophin family member of growth factors encoded by the BDNF gene. Though primarily expressed by the hippocampus and cortex, BDNF is found in other tissues such as the kidney, motor neurons, and skeletal muscles. It is one of the proteins that contributes to the growth and maintenance of neurons and is necessary for long-term memory.  An increase in BDNF production in the human brain has been linked to certain types of physical exercise, which stimulates exercise-induced neurogenesis. Dementia, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, anorexia nervosa, acne vulgaris, depression, and autism are diseases all associated with abnormal levels of BDNF.
